The presentation-technique is really nice. Thanks for sharing. But I did miss one thing: a button or a funtion to stop the presentation. "ESC" doesn't work.

Inspiring post! But it just applies to very specific animations (rotations). I chose to make a more messy variation (http://jsfiddle.net/potatodie/... so I didn't have to bother about the optimizations :)

If you replace this line:
// animctx.fillStyle = i % 2 === 0 ? '#000' : '#fff';

With these:var color = Math.sin(i / 2) * 63 + 64;
if (i % 2) color += 128;
var hex = Math.floor(color).toString(16);
animctx.fillStyle = '#'+hex+hex+hex;

You get shades of gray instead of just black and white to further enhance the depth effect.

This is a great post, and I agree with every bit of it. I'll actually be teaching my first college course tomorrow evening, and the topic is Dynamic HTML with JavaScript. The first thing I noticed when I started reading the assigned textbook was, "Wow, they are still showing examples with document.write()?" As I progressed I came to the realization that the text was written in the late 1990s/early 2000s and has been reprinted with few updates ever since. How could I tell? Netscape was referenced in at least several paragraphs.

One of the first things I'll do is push the department head to pick another book. For the time being I will point students to online resources wherever needed and start them off with modern coding standards like the ones mentioned here.

Thanks! This was such an information-packed talk! I wish I could have been there in person to applaud. I like the fact that you covered a lot of options in a short space of time, rather than it being a step-by-step guide to doing just one task. For any topic which someone's interested in, they can then research the topic themselves. Often it's enough to find out that something's possible rather than being shown exactly how to do it. I am keen to try the VLC method for recording screencasts as I have been meaning to do this for a long time.
